Green Route
The German-French scenic route
Welcome to the Green Route in the Heart of Europe
For all European-minded people the Green Route means much more than just a simple touristic route. Founded in 1960 on the initiative of Joseph Rey, former mayor of Colmar and one of the great advocates of the French-German reconciliation, the Green Route was and still is a milestone on the way to a United Europe: The Green Route shows the bonds of a friendship between the people of the Vosges, Alsace and the Black Forest.
Everywhere along the Green Route you may find impressive historic-cultural places. All the year round there are cultural and sporting highlights of international importance. Gourmets especially will enjoy the Green Route; exquisite restaurants as well as cosy inns invite you to taste the famous cuisine of this region and the wines of the upper Rhine valley which are worldwide renowned.
The 17 towns and villages on both sides of the Rhine River – the Association Green Route – promise to do their best to make your stay along the Green Route as enjoyable as possible, with lasting memories.
A magnificent testimony to German-French friendship!
A magnificent testimony to German-French friendship
In 1960, the former mayor of Colmar, Joseph Rey, initiated the road together with his colleague Joseph Bueb, mayor of Breisach. They had a brilliant idea: to give a positive impetus to tourism in
the region. In addition, they wanted to create a testimony to the incredible German-French friendship!
The Green Route is still an amazing expression of this friendship today. It was founded in the year after the signing of the Élysée Treaty, and it's the perfect example of a policy of
reconciliation and unity in Europe.
